Resident deer herd causes problemsThere is a resident deer herd of around 22 animals in the southwest part of Monticello which enter the city every night in search of food. They eat flowers, shrubs and trees throughout the city. They squeeze through fences, until they are useless. These deer have never left the area. They do not migrate to warmer canyons in the winter, even with two feet of snow on the ground. Local wildlife officers have verified that they are “resident deer”.

Top spot at state history fairHaley Parker, a senior at San Juan High School, walked away with top honors at the Utah State History Fair on April 16. Parker’s historical paper on uranium mining in San Juan County won first place honors in her category. In addition, she was awarded $1,000 for being named the top project in the entire fair, in addition to $100 from the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies.

Gordon Dam and Reservoir under study for expansionThe San Juan County Commission released a letter from the State of Utah detailing deadlines for the testing, design and cost estimates of proposed dams at Clay Draw and Gordon Reservoir sites now under consideration for additional water storage. All preliminary work should be complete by October, paving the way for a final decision which could allow work to begin as soon as funding is completed.
