Lady Broncos claim state title

SPORTS SHORTSby Scott Boyle State Champs!! That is the familiar cry fans and friends and all of Blanding are once again trumpeting about the young ladies of San Juan. Only this time, it isn’t the five-time defending state champion volleyball team, it’s the softball team, who rode the big coattails of senior Generra Nielson to San Juan’s first ever 2A state softball championship with a thrilling 5-2 win over the Wahb Wasps from Nephi. Deer poached in the City of Monticello

Late on Sunday, May 4 or early Monday, May 5 at least two doe deer were shot near the swimming pool in Monticello. One deer was found dead on the lawn of a nearby residence; while the other was gut shot and had to be euthanized near the entrance to the pool. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Officers is investigating the poaching.

The end of civilization (Part II)

Terri Winder’s column last week (May 7 SJR) made my blood pressure spike! I was not upset with Terri, but with the subject she broached. I agree with her. Just thinking about it makes me crazy. If you read the San Juan Record, you may recall she said that cell phones and the associated terrorist activity known as TEXTING is going to be “the end of civilization as we know it.”

Uranium once again being milled in San Juan County

Well, it has been a long, expensive, painful wait – about half a lifetime for many of us in southeast Utah. But on April 30, 2008, the Dennison Mill on White Mesa (six miles south of Blanding) officially began milling uranium ore. It is the first time that has happened in the United States in decades.
