Heading into a new year, the Monticello High School girls basketball team sits at 4-4 and its full slate of Region 19 games ahead of them.
In Region 19, Wayne is out front with a 2-0 region record and 7-3 overall. Monument Valley is 0-1 and 9-2 overall. Pinnacle is 0-1 with a 6-6 season record.
Monticello, Green River (2-7), and Whitehorse (2-3) have yet to play a region game.
Therefore, it looks like the key games for the Lady Bucks going forward will be against Wayne on the road on January 11, at home with Monument Valley on January 23, at home with Wayne on February 8, and on the road at Monument Valley on February 16.
After several weeks of play, the Lady Bucks appear to be gelling and look to be in a good spot to challenge Wayne and Monument Valley for the Region 19 title.
According to the Deseret News, at this point in the season the top 5 ranked 1A girls teams are 1. Piute (7-2); 2. Panguitch (7-2); 3. Milford (6-5); 4. Wayne (7-3); and 5. Rich (5-5).
The Lady Bucks will be in action this Friday, January 5, when they host the Tabiona Tigers. Game times TBD.
After winning their opener against Cortez, the Monticello boys basketball team has struggled with a four-game losing streak with losses to Bryce Valley, Tintic, Grand and San Juan.
Like the girls, the boys have yet to play a Region 19 game.
At present, Wayne has moved out to the region lead with a 1-0 record and 6-4 overall. Pinnacle sits at 0-1 in region with a 3-6 overall record.
Monticello (1-4), Whitehorse (0-0), Monument Valley (1-0) and Green River (2-5) will all start region play next week.
It will be a challenge for the boys to repeat as Region 19 champions, but if they can cut down on unforced errors and start to play tougher defense and rebound, they have a real shot at it.
Key games will start quickly at home with Wayne on January 12, on the road against Pinnacle on January 26, and on the road against Wayne on February 9.

The Buckaroo boys head out to the basin after the Christmas lay-off to take on the Tabiona Tigers on January 5 and Altamont Longhorns on January 6.
