Archibald James (Jim) Bourne graduated from the University of Wisconsin River Falls with a Master of Science Degree in Agronomy on January 28, 1956, plus two years of professional preparation for teaching, and testimonials of good moral character and two years of successfully teaching agriculture in Wisconsin schools in 1958.
Jim raised turkeys, went into sales of animal health products, and gave seminars on raising health chickens, turkeys, pigs.
Jim and Mary were married in Madison, Wisconsin in 1972. Three daughters from his previous marriage joined them and Mary’s two children to form a new family. His two sons James and Paul were independently on their own at that time.
They then moved to Winona, Minnesota and joined Central United Methodist Church. For them, Sunday church was a must, and they participated in family activities at church.
They started a successful medical equipment dealership—Bourne Medical Service Inc. with Mary as CEO (after retiring from nursing), and Jim as consultant. He taught Mary a lot about selling—he was really good at it!
After retiring, they moved to Moab, then Blanding, UT, finally to Grand Junction, CO, their final retirement home. They enjoyed the scenery, mountains, valleys and back roads via ATV, jeep, and FJ Cruiser, and some hiking, many times in a state of awe. It is beautiful!
Due to the post-polio syndrome, Jim’s physical condition began to decline. By the end of 2013, he entered the Palisade Living Center. Mary was no longer able to give him the nursing care at home that he so greatly deserved.
Mary took him on weekly outings in the car until he was unable to get into the car, was at all doctor or dental appointments for him, had lunch with him at the Living Center weekly, sometimes more often.
Jim was and will forever be the love of Mary’s life. His passing was peaceful—even a blessing. He just went to sleep, has no more pain, and is now with our Heavenly Father.
Jim’s survivors include: James Peter Bourne, Paul Scott Bourne, Toni Bourne Zinsli and daughter Elizabeth, Susan Bourne Malone and son Patrick, Holly Bourne Klein and daughters Kimberly Schommer (a son and daughter), Kelly Schneeman (a son), wife Mary Podell Bourne, Alyson Podell Dahlquist and daughter Amanda Kistler (a son and daughter), sons Jack Kistler, and John Kistler (a daugher), Thomas Podell.
A memorial fund in Jim’s name has been prepared. Monies from this fund will go ONLY towards the replacement of a 20 year old van that is badly needed by the Palisade Living Center.
A used, in excellent condition, low mileage transport van will be used to take only residents thereof to and from doctor appointments. Estimated cost is $20,000 to $30,000.
A contribution of any amount (the bank prefers money orders—checks acceptable) will be greatly appreciated. It can be sent to: A. James Bourne Memorial Account, Clifton Alpine Bank, 3243 I-70 Business Loop, Clifton, CO 81520
Mary will make sure these monies are properly delivered to the Palisade Living Center; They will maintain a list of the contributors.
Thank you and God Bless You, The James Bourne family
