This is one of the major celebrations of our county that is held in Blanding each year.
The theme this year is, “Let Freedom Ring”
New events that are planned for the celebration this year include:
• Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast is at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning, the 4th of July. The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast is patterned after the National Prayer Breakfast held in Washington each year.
The event originated as a time of personal reflection and rededication to God, as well as an opportunity to restore and reaffirm our spiritual heritage as Americans. It seeks to create common ground across religious, political and social divisions purely around the ideas and messages of Jesus Christ without affiliation to any one religious institution.
Since its inception in 1970, several states and cities have established their own annual prayer breakfast events. This Mayor’s prayer Breakfast will echo these objectives through, word, song and prayer.
• Celebrate America, Pageant at 3 p.m. on Saturday, the 4th of July. This will be an exciting, fast-moving program using the aid of song, dance, stories, a band, slides and a skit to “Celebrate America.”
• Jeep Trip from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday, the 3rd of July. This is a “Lynn Lyman Commemoration Jeep Trip” for jeeps or similar type vehicles. Participants will their four wheel drive and will see Indian mounds, a beaver pond, large dinosaur bone, petrified log, and more.
• Four wheeler trip from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, the 3rd of July. This is a fun trip with Indian ruins and other points of interest.
Organizers say that we celebrate our Independence, but “we must remember that it is not just independence that we celebrate – it is liberty from an all powerful oppressive government.
“We initially did not seek an independence from England, we sought liberty, but when our liberties were ebbed away by an all powerful and over controlling government we declared our independence, for the sake of liberty.
“Many people have fought and gained independence from another country, only to find that their new government was as oppressive as the last.
“But, this time it was different and better for us because our Founding Fathers created a Republic with a Constitution that limited government and granted life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
“We became the freest people on earth. May we always remember the price that was paid for our liberty and see to it that our elected officials control our government in accordance with the constitution, so that we can truly – ‘Let Freedom Ring’ for us and our children.”
