Thirteen Boy Scouts from Monticello and eleven from Blanding left San Juan County on July 23 for an 18-day National Boy Scout Jamboree.  They were joined by two Scouts from Moab, and two more from other areas in Utah.  These Scouts will be joined in Fort A. P. Hill, where this Jamboree will be held, by eight more Scouts from Twin Falls, ID, to form a full troop of 36 Scouts and four adult leaders.

The Jamboree proper lasts from July 26 to August 4 and includes numerous activities for Scouts and opportunities to meet Scouts from other parts of the United States and other countries. 

There are also two arena shows attended by all of the approximately 40,000 Scouts participating in the Jamboree.

Following the Jamboree, most of the Utah National Parks Council contingent, a total of 15 troops, will embark on a six day tour of sites in Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio important in the history of the United States and in the history of their faith. 

All of these Scouts are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  The council also offers tours that include more national historic sites for Scouts who are not Latter-day Saints.

This Jamboree, which coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, is the last of eight to be held at Fort A. P. Hill. 

The next Jamboree, in 2013, will be held at a new 50,000 acre high adventure property acquired by the Boy Scouts of America in the New River Gorge of West Virginia.
