Their efforts to control the blaze, despite explosive, tinder-dry conditions, may have stopped a larger fire.
Boy Scouts from Troop 512 and their leaders were returning from a camp near Fry Canyon when they came upon a fire on Highway 95 near Mule Canyon.
Having all the water from the campout in the back of the truck, CJ Berrett (age 13), Ethan Lyman (age 13), Craig Crippen and Jared Berrett worked to put out the lateral grass fires. One of the fires made it to within just a few hundred feet of Mule Canyon.
A cell phone call was placed to San Juan County Dispatch and crews arrived to complete the fire fighting effort about 30 minutes later.
Strict fire restrictions are in place while drought conditions persist.
