Colleen was a resident of San Juan County for a short time prior to her death. Mary Platero, of Montezuma Creek, is Colleen’s sister. Colleen lived with Leo and Mary for eight months. She was acquainted with several people from Blanding.
Colleen passed away on June 2, 2008 in Gallup, NM. She was 55 years old. Her funeral service was held in Gallup, NM on June 7, 2008.
She is buried in the family cemetery in Jones Ranch, New Mexico.
Colleen attended the LDS Placement Program for nine years. She graduated from Panguitch High School in 1972. She attended Brigham Young University. She became a Lab Technician and worked at the Gallup Indian Medical Center for 18 years.
When new equipment was provided at the hospital, she was the the one who was sent to be trained, then she trained other staff at the hospital. She was a very intelligent person.
She was a member of the Montezuma Creek Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed reading and frequently would check out books from the San Juan library or book mobile.
She enjoyed shopping, arts and crafts, watching movies, and going on short trips.
She had a strong testimony of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Her children were the most important people to her and she loved them very much.
Her survivors include three sons, Ian, Kyle and Roman, two daughters, Mycah and Robyn and her father, Deswood Benally, all of New Mexico. She also has five sisters and one brother.
Her mother, Louise J. Benally, preceded her in death in 1994.
Mary Platero wants to express her appreciation to all those who were kind and friendly to her sister during the time she stayed with them.
