Jan 14, 1932 ~ July 8, 2015

Dan Roy Barber 83, passed away peacefully July 8 at home with his family by his side. He was born January 14, 1932 to Myron and Evelyn “Aurelia” Walker Barber in Syracuse, UT.

He spent his younger years in Hunter, Utah before moving to Monticello and San Juan County while going to school he also worked helping his dad dry farm. In high school Dan was very popular and well liked by everyone. He loved playing basketball and at 6’7 he definitely had the advantage!

After graduating he was called to serve on a mission in New Zealand. He always talked about what a beautiful place and experience it was. After returning home, he went to BYU to study engineering for a year until he was called home to help his father.

Dan was “old school” when it came to work. He worked driving logging truck, hauling ore then worked mining uranium for his dad at the Elk Ridge mine.

In 1960, he fell in love with Dixie Joy Wilson. They were married February 2, 1961 and had two children. Eventually they moved to Milan, NM. Dan would mine uranium along with his brother-in-law Gary Weierman the next 20 years until the uranium mines shut down. He then moved his family to Couer D’ Alene, ID for three years before moving to Kanab. He then went to work driving for Page Steel for 15 years until a work accident disabled him permanently in 2000.

That was when he started writing his very opinionated “Letters to the Editor” which he thoroughly enjoyed. Dan was a strong believer in the gospel and dedicated to serving others, especially his family.

Dan is survived by his daughter Jodi Chavez, granddaughter Sasha (Tom) Avant, two beautiful great-grandkids Mike and Aparri, his half brothers Allen, David (Joan), Gary (Caroline) Barber and a favorite cousin Brent Bonham.

He is preceded in death by his wife Dixie, son Jeffery Boyd, grandson Mitchell Wade Chavez, his father and mother, five older brothers Myron Dean (Lorraine), John Walker (Jean), Frank Robert (Ruth), Charles Richard (Helen) and Glenn Arnold (Beverly).

Those that knew Dan are encouraged to share stories and memories of him to dbarj@kanab.net. Private family services to be held later.
