Easter services set at local churches

The Easter season means many things in San Juan County. In addition to local residents, there are a large number of visitors to the area, and they will be able to participate in Easter services at area churches.

Holy Week events began on Palm Sunday and will culminate on Easter.

First Baptist Church in Monticello will start with breakfast at 8:45 a.m. on Easter Sunday, and include Sunday School at 9:45 and Worship service at 11, followed by an Easter Egg Hunt for the kids.

First Baptist Church in Blanding will hold regular services at 11 a.m. on Easter morning, followed by a Potluck at 12:30 p.m.

St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monticello will have Mass on Holy Thursday at 8 p.m., Good Friday Service at 6 p.m. and Sunday Mass at noon.

San Juan Community Evangelical Church will hold sunrise services at 7 a.m. with a breakfast and fellowship to follow.

St. Christopher Mission in Bluff will have Liturgy on Thursday at 6 p.m. including footwashing, a Good Friday worship at 6 p.m. and an Easter Sunday sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. on the bluffs just east of the mission, followed by breakfast at the Community Center. Easter Service is in the big church at 10 a.m.

St. John’s in Montezuma Creek will have the Great Vigil on Saturday night at 6 p.m. with Baptisms. Sunday services in Oljato will be at noon.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wards will hold regular Sacrament meetings, which generally begin at 9 and 11 a.m.

The Monticello Stake will present an Easter Cantata on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the North LDS Chapel. The musical program with narration takes the listener through the birth, life, atonement, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the San Juan Chamber of Commerce is being held at the Canyon Country Discovery Center at the north end of Monticello on Saturday. The Easter Bunny will be available for photos. There are timed and separated areas for the egg hunt according to age starting at 11 a.m. and going every 20 minutes.

The San Juan High School National Honor Society wll sponsor an Easter Egg Hunt on April 15 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Blanding Visitor Center park.

Southeast Utah is filled with tourists participating in the annual Easter Safari Weekend, which is headquartered in Moab.
