Landowners at the Elk Meadows subdivision north of Monticello are concerned that the proposed new location of the Monticello airport will have a negative impact on their neighborhood.



The City of Monticello has planned, for a number of years, to move the city airport to a new location just east of the current airport. However, a public hearing on November 13 was the first time that many of the landowners had heard of the plan.



The City has received notice that construction on the airport must begin soon or the city risks losing a significant amount of federal funding. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in the spring.



Although the new airport site is just across Highway 191 from the current airport, the new alignment would put the Elk Meadows area in the flight path of the airport. The landowners are concerned that the new flight path would result in height limitations to building in the subdivision and increase the risk to property owners.



All of the approximately 50 home sites in the subdivision have been sold, with a small number of homes either built or under construction.



The second phase of the Elk Meadows project has failed and is scheduled to be sold in a trustees sale on November 26.
