After many months of hard work, training and early morning practices, the Monticello High School drill team completed a successful season at the 1A State Drill Championships this past weekend.

The team captured the second place overall trophy after earning second place finishes in Dance and Kick and a third place finish in Military.

Shelbie Musselman, Elli Nielson, and Whitney Knudsen each earned All-state honors. Junior Shelbie Musselman placed second in the State Drill Down competition, where dancers from all 1A schools competed as drill commands were called out in a “last man standing” effort to complete the commands without making a mistake.

Head Coach Ashley Adair praised the team for their hard work and for living up to their motto, “It’s a matter of heart.”

Adair said they really “left it all on the floor this weekend. I am beyond proud of them. Half of this team had little to no dance experience starting the season. They are a pretty impressive group of girls.”

With no seniors on the team, the Buckaroos will look to build on this seasons experience and continue their success next year in the 2A ranks.
