Lyle Anderson, the local recruiter and probable scoutmaster for the troop, reports that 34 of the slots for Boy Scouts in his troop have been allocated to Boy Scouts from San Juan County or their relatives.
The jamboree will celebrate the centennial of Scouting in America. Lord Baden-Powell started Scouting in England in 1907. Three years later, the first troop was organized in the United States.
“I expect this to be the biggest party the Boy Scouts have ever thrown,” said Anderson, who was an assistant scoutmaster for a jamboree troop in 2001 and scoutmaster for a San Juan County troop in 2005.
The jamboree, which will be held at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, will begin in late June or late July in 2010 and run for nine days. The jamboree will be followed by a nine day tour of historical sites.
Anderson’s troop will tour Washington, Baltimore, Gettysburg, Philadelphia, New York, Palmyra, Cleveland and Kirtland, Ohio. Other troops will replace the LDS historical sites with Boston, Lexington and Concord.
The total cost of the jamboree, which includes all cost except the scout’s uniform, is estimated at $2,400 to $2,900 per boy. Only a $100 refundable deposit is required to hold a spot.
Fundraisers to help the scouts earn part of the cost are planned. Scouts need to be 12-18 years old at the time of the jamboree.
“There is room for 35 or 36 boys in the troop. 34 boys have told me they want to go, but not all of them have sent in applications. The slots will go to those first 35 or 36 boys to turn in their applications,” says Anderson.
