The pool will get a “dry run” on Saturday, July 10 at an open house for members of the community. The open house will feature drawings and door prizes and the chance to become the first swimmer when the pool opens for swimming on Monday, July 12.
On July 12, there will be no charge to swim during the free swim periods from 1 to 5 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m.
The new pool was made possible, in part, by local schoolchildren, who donated one million pennies for the project. The dedication of the local students helped convince other organizations, such as San Juan County, the Eccles Foundation, and the Utah Community Impact Board, to make the contributions that were necessary for the new pool.
A community-wide sales tax, approved by voters in 2008, will also help operate the facility, which is expected to be open from May through September each year.
The new facility replaces the old community pool, which was built in the 1950s and was demolished over one year ago after serving the community for more than 50 years.
The San Juan Record is interested in collecting memories of the old swimming pool. Please send your memories to the paper at PO Box 879, Monticello, UT 84535 or via email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
