Rebecca Benally
Incumbent District 3 County Commissioner
Party : Democrat

Rebecca Benally is the current District 3 County Commissioner. A former educator, teacher, and school administrator, she has been a resident of San Juan County since 1980 and lives in Montezuma Creek. Benally is running for re-election because she wants to revitalize the county’s economy.

“We are experiencing an unemployment rate that is high,” Benally said. “We’ve restructured our economic development department for job creation as a result. That’s why my platform is economic development and job creation.”

Benally also wants to see an expansion of essential services, particularly on Native American reservations within the county.

“No matter what part of the county you are from we need to improve the availability of services, whether it’s education or health or economic development,” Benally said. “We have over 2,000 miles of roads and about 700 miles are on the southern part of the county so those are some of the areas we need to help maintain and improve.”

Although Benally’s county commissioner seat is a partisan position, she says she doesn’t want voters to put too much emphasis on politics.

“Poverty knows no party line,” Benally said. “Even though I am part of the Democratic party, I want to loudly and clearly convey that a lot of the issues and concerns in our county are non-partisan.”

Benally believes these non-partisan issues include maintaining bus routes and improving access to emergency services. If re-elected, she looks to focus on the concerns her constituents feel are most important.

“While county government may be the lowest form of government, I believe that because we are closest to the issues and concerns of what really is the need of the local people, it’s the most important form of government,” Benally said.
