San Juan County Fair promises to be best in state

The 2008 San Juan County Fair culminates this week with a full schedule of activities. “Best in State 2008” is the theme for the 2008 fair.

Under the direction of fair director Anna Thayn, a hard working fair grounds crew led by Josh Shakespeare, and a large group of fair board volunteers, the fair continues to grow each year. The fair volunteers of the year for 2008 are Gray and Sharon Wangelin.

Although the opening ceremonies for the fair is scheduled to take place this evening (Wednesday August 8), a number of fair events have already taken place, including the local fun rodeo, and horse games on August 1.

The Four Corners Shoot-out at Bull Hollow Raceway took place on Saturday August 2, as well as the Open Horse Show.

Most events take place at the San Juan County Fairgrounds on Highway 491 in Monticello.

The Little Miss and Mister Wrangler Contest took place on Tuesday, August 5.

The Blue Mountain Round-up Rodeo Queen Pageant, and the Miss San Juan County Pageant were cancelled this year due to a lack of interest.

Highlights on Wednesday August 6 include the opening ceremonies and recognition of fair volunteers at 6:30 p.m., the Farm Bureau Talent Find at 7 p.m., and the outdoor movie presentation of Nim’s Island (rated PG) at 9:15 p.m.

Highlights on Thursday, August 7 includes livestock shows, a childrens fair, and fair exhibits throughout the day, leading up to country music star Darryl Worley live in concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. Opening act for Worley is Utah native Charley Jenkins.

Friday August 8, is pink day at the fair for breast cancer awareness. Events kick off with a 5K pink day fun run and 2K walk at Loyds Lake beginning at 6:30 a.m. Other Friday activities include livestock shows, childrens fair, fair exhibits throughout the day, free swimming in the afternoon, Whip Boy show at 6 p.m. and the Blue Mountain Roundup Rodeo beginning at 8 p.m.

The fair culminates with a busy day on Saturday, August 9, beginning with a free breakfast by the Monticello Lions Club at the pavilion behind the Monticello Post Office. Fair exhibits open to the public at 9 a.m., and the Junior livestock show begins at 1 p.m.

The Blue Mountain Roundup Rodeo closes the San Juan County Fair, with a start time at 8 p.m.
