In order to be accepted, both young men have had to work seriously in school and meet the requirements of the CUUB program. Tirich became interested in CUUB when Tanaya Winder came to SJH from Colorado in October to visit with motivated students. Tirich, who hails from Washington, participates in Football and Track at SJH. He applied for CUUB so he will be ready for college when the time comes. He is interested in working in the logging industry.
Donovan also attended the meeting when Ms. Winder, the counselor for CUUB, came to visit SJH. He felt especially enthusiastic about meeting youth from other tribes while preparing for a career in Law Enforcement!
He is active in the MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) Club and hopes to play football next year. He says being in CUUB will help him do even better in high school as well as prepare for college.
Upward Bound is a federally-funded club for first generation and/or low income freshmen and sophomores. Parents and students who are interested may see their school counselor.
Tirich is the son of Terry and Heather Gardner; and Donovan lives with his mother Colleen Holliday, all of Blanding.
