The Monticello Lion’s Club prepared a delicious spread of chicken, dutchoven potatoes, green salad, cake and punch. The tables were beautifully decorated with whimsical confetti and a variety of candy kisses.
Steve Young explained that the VMTE has been able to help people by providing 800 cancer screenings. He was not able to report how many of those actually caught cancer in early stages but revealed that many people have written letters of thanks for the opportunity to receive the screenings and how it made a big difference in their lives.
On the subject of letter writing, Young said now is the time they need our help. The VMTE has funding through this year, but it will be end the Congress can be convinced to continue to fund this very worthwhile program.
Following the dinner, the Cancer Awareness Walk took place at the old millsite and walking trail. Many enthusiastic volunteers handed out water, t-shirts, and information on preventative healthy living.
The winds were calm and it was an enjoyable evening.
Names of locals who had lost their battle with cancer this year were read, and a balloon released for each one.
The walking trail was lined with luminaries decorated by both family members of cancer victims and survivors as well as the kids at the elementary school and others who sponsored the walk through the Boy Scouts.
The kiosk was full of testimonials of victims and their families as well as a history of the Uranium Mill that has affected so many lives.
Participants wish to thank the Boy Scouts, Lions Club, VMTE Committee, City of Monticello and all the volunteers that made the evening a success. They express appreciation for their dedication to this cause and helping inform and help in many ways.
If you would like to see the VMTE program continue, please write to your Congressmen and Representatives, especially if you have received any of the services the VMTE has provided.
