The most wonderful time of the year is back. The sounds and smells, the lights and cheers, the parents on the edge of their seats and a sea of orange and black in the stands.  Yes it’s wrestling season once again.

The fans have been waiting, the wrestlers and coaches have been preparing, and the Monticello Buckaroo wrestlers added a new tournament to their 2010 schedule, staying close to home this week and attending the inaugural “Dawg Fight” Tournament in Dove Creek, CO. The Bucks put on a good show at the 11-team tournament, bringing home a second place team finish, with one point separating them from Dove Creek.

Leading the Bucks are Hunter Bowring and Brian Robinson, who dominated their weight classes and earned first place medals. Bowring added five wins at the tourney and is now 15-0 for the year. Robinson put an end to the undefeated run of a strong wrestler from Dolores, pinning him in the second round of the match.

Earning second place medals are Coltan Musselman and Roque DeAnda. Musselman lost a heart breaker, coming up one short in the finals, while DeAnda faced teammate Robinson in an all-orange final at 119 pounds.

Third place finishers for the Buckaroos are Tim Ryan and Nephi Barlow, each with three wins by fall on the weekend.  Austin Clarke and Jared Hanson finished fourth, and Eric Anderson, Dailyn Warren and Curtis Baird are sixth. Also working hard are Joe Engel and Kelland Brewer.

The Bucks opened their home season against the Grand Red Devils. When it was all done, the Devils edged the Bucks 40-37.

The night had several highlights that keep the large home crowd on the edge of their seats.

Brian Robinson delighted the crowd in his match against Grand County’s “Ice”.  The senior  beat Robinson several times in the previous season, but Robinson got an early lead with a takedown and near fall. In the second, Ice turned the tables and tied the score. In overtime, Robinson went for the takedown and Ice fled the mat, earning a penalty point and an exciting win for Robinson.

Coltan Musselman also scored a big win for the Bucks, taking control early and finishing his opponent off with a pin. Tim Ryan scored early and often, earning a 12-4 win in a crowd-pleasing match.

Hunter Bowring and Dailyn Warren earned forfeits from the Devils. Jake Giles, Nephi Barlow, John Mayne, Curtis Baird, Roque DeAnda and Trevor Wagstaff all worked hard but came up short of the win in their matches.

The Bucks travel to Blanding Wednesday (tonight) with action starting at 7 p.m. and travel to the Manti Tournament over the weekend.
