The Charls Redd Center for Western Studies is conducting a writing/visual contest to learn about, and share, the experiences that local residents have had on public lands within the county.

Area residents are invited to submit written or visual entries that describe your experiences on, memories of, and ties to our public lands. These could include personal essays, poetry, photographs, artwork, or other information that is written or visual.

The Redd Center will give cash prizes for the best entries. Judging will be in three age categories: children, young adults, and adults.

The Redd Center will post selected entries on a San Juan County Story Contest webpage at

The general question that the Redd Center would like writers to consider is: Describe an experience you had on the public lands in San Juan County.

Some questions that may help prime your memory are:

• Tell us about your parent’s, yours, and your children’s best memories on the public lands.

• Tell how those experiences have changed from generation to generation.

• How do you hope the public lands will look 50 or 100 years from now?

There will be two general categories, written and visual. Depending on the number of entries received, the written category might be broken into subgroups, such as poetry, history, personal essay, etc.

The subcategories for visual are artwork and photographs.

Age Groups are Children (8-12), Young Adults (13-17) and Adults (18+).

Prizes for Children are $20 for first place, $10 for second place, and $5 for third place.

Prizes for Young Adults are $50 for first place, $30 for second place and $20 for third place.

Prizes for Adults are $100 for first place, $50 for second place and $30 for third place.

The grand prize is $300.
