Hi, I am George Rice (Jr.) and I am running for city council for the City of Monticello. As a public works employee for Monticello, I see the things that our town really needs. Everyday I am involved in projects that are in the best interest of Monticello. One thing that is constantly on my mind is keeping things within a very limited budget. Some of the things I see that I am concerned about require that we be financially prepared for. Our garbage trucks are getting old, the sewer lagoons need to be dredged, and we have some streets that are in pretty bad shape. These types of things come with a hefty price tag. One of the issues I would like to focus on is preparing financially so we can maintain what is really important, streets, sanitation equipment, and water and sewer infrastructure.

Another issue that is on everyone’s minds is the current drought. I think it is important we look in to searching for additional sources of water. Whether it is purchasing additional water rights, improving our current wells, or drilling more wells, this issue needs serious consideration. We also need to take a serious look on ways to conserve water. Xeric landscapes to replace lawns and drip irrigation systems are reasonably easy and affordable to do. One of my favorite hobbies is gardening. I have been using a drip irrigation system for several years now. It is amazing how much water can be saved compared to overhead sprinklers. There is no evaporation and the water goes right to the plant’s root zone.

If these issues are important to you and you feel the same way as I do, I would like to represent you as a city council member. Monticello is a great place to live and I would like to have the opportunity to serve and continue making this a great place to live.
