It seemed like the Beaver Beavers had barely stepped off the bus in Blanding before they were up 6-0 with just under seven minutes left in the first quarter.
San Juan’s defense stepped up and turned their guests away on their next possession but a muffed punt returned the ball to the visiting Beavers, who scored shortly afterwards on a halfback pass. The rest of the half was all Beaver as they extended their lead to 25-0.
In the second half, both defenses took center stage as the offenses struggled to sustain a significant drive. The Beavers managed to break the cycle and add another touchdown to their score early in the fourth when they scored again on their third half back pass of the night.
San Juan finally got on the board about midway through the fourth quarter when sophomore quarterback Payton Palmer hooked up on a 65-yard pass with freshman receiver Nate Nielson. Kasper Pedersen hit the PAT to bring the score to 32-7.
The Broncos missed a couple of other opportunities to cut into the Beaver’s lead when they missed a 42-yard field goal attempt and dropped a pass in the end zone.
In spite of the lopsided score, the Bronco defense played well for most of the game. A few mental errors led to big plays for the Beavers, which led to 25 of their 32 points.
San Juan’s offense also had some solid performances. The Broncos totaled 105 yards rushing, led by Jens Grover’s 58 yards. Max Morley added 11 yards, while Grant Laws and Terrace Tate chipped in 13 and 21 yards, respectively. Palmer and Tate combined to throw for another 94 yards through the air with one touchdown and no interceptions.
Trason Jack led San Juan’s defensive effort, tallying 17 tackles. Grover was right behind with 13 stops. Brayden Giddings had 11, while Holden Smith and Sterling Black each logged 10 tackles. Hayden Brown pitched in nine tackles just ahead of Laws and Payton Palmer who had six.
Jordan Blake had four tackles and Chase Palmer and Brittain Bowring each had three tackles. Palmer also had a sack. DiQuan Lopez and Jonathon Lewis had two tackles each and Kesian Barton had one.
The Broncos take on the Enterprise Wolves on the road. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
