My name is Keele Johnson and I’m running for Blanding City Council. I am a lifelong resident of San Juan County, the last 36 years in Blanding. I retired from the CEU: San Juan after 32 years. My background includes 8 years in the Utah State Legislature, a Governor’s appointment to the Utah Wildlife Board, and twice serving on the Blanding City Council. I have a bachelor’s degree from BYU and a Masters from the University of Utah. I am a fiscal conservative. I do not believe in excessive taxes and feel we should live within our means.
Blanding is a well-managed city with good employees and administration. I have no axe to grind and don’t have a personal agenda. I am a strong believer in the continued development of our water resources. Without water we have no future. I remember past droughts, rationing water and people hauling from wells to water their yards. It was a real hardship just to keep yards alive. I support the expansion of the Dry Wash reservoir, the securing more water from Indian Creek, and the continued improvement of the city system. If Blanding is going to thrive, development of water will continue to be a major issue.
If we want our children and grandchildren to be able to stay and build a future in Blanding, economic development has to be a major concern.
As a legislator I chaired the Economic Development Committee and understand its importance. I have good contacts and know how to aggressively pursue business opportunities.
Responsible development of recreational opportunities in our community is both a quality of life issue and a key to economic development. Healthy communities have ample recreation opportunities for youth and citizens of all ages.
I am always struck by the number of active people in Blanding who use our rec center, ball fields and school facilities. We need to support that kind of activity in a smart, economically sound way.
I am also concerned with how our city looks to those visiting here. City beautification should be an ongoing process. Beautification not only improves our standard of living, and increases the value of our property, it also plays an important role in businesses and people deciding to move here.
Blanding is a terrific community. I would appreciate the opportunity to serve as we work together to ensure it continues to be vibrant and fiscally sound.
