A handful of volunteers combined their efforts on July 12 to build a portion of trail connecting trails in the Mill Site trail system for mountain bikes.

Essentially they worked to reconstruct trail #2 (bypass the existing trail) to include more “whoop-de-doos”, which makes the ascent or descent (whichever direction you decide to travel) more fun and interesting.

According to Matt Moore, of the Four Corners School of Outdoor Education, “The goal is to improve the mountain biking experience of the local area.”

The volunteers on Saturday included Matt Moore, Steve Munsell, and Jenna Whetzel of Four Corners School, Andrew Goodwin of Blanding, and three members of “Team Carnage Asada”, including Rick Clark, Sam Robins, and Andy Platt.

Several groups have been involved in trail building and improvement at the mill site and on the network of trails that meander among the Blue Mountains.

The groups include The Four Corners School and it’s Canyon Country Youth Corp, Monticello City Recreation Director Oliver Crane and his summer youth parks and recreation experts, and “Team Carnage Asada”.

The next volunteer trail building day is August 2. Interested recruits are encouraged to enlist. The focus on August 2 will be on the Tower Trail at Abajo Peak. The work is in preparation for the inaugural Abajo Enduro Mountain Bike Race, which will take place on August 9. The race will begin on Abajo Peak and end at Foy Lake.
