A law enforcement officer went to the intersection of Highways 163 and 261 at approximately 6:30 p.m. on August 12 to check on a report of two intoxicated individuals walking down the highway.
After a San Juan County Sheriffs Deputy arrived at the scene, one of individuals took off running. The deputy pursued the subject on foot for several miles before containing the subject on the cliff bands above the San Juan River near the Goosenecks.
As darkness approached and the deputies closed in, the subject slipped down through a crack in the cliffs towards the river.
When a deputy continued to give chase, the subject then jumped to a ledge. Soon afterwards, the subject surrendered with nowhere else to go.
However, Search and Rescue crews were called out after the deputy and the subject attempted multiple times to re-ascend the cliff with no luck.
Members of the Search and Rescue crew from Blanding rappelled down to the ledge and helped the stranded men climb with the assistance of the rope.
Deputies transported the subject to the San Juan County Jail, where he faces charges and several thousand dollars in outstanding warrants.
