More than 80 runners enjoyed nearly perfect conditions at the Newspaper Rock 10K race on October 10 in spectacular Indian Creek canyon.

Overall winner of the 10K race, which begins at Newspaper Rock and finishes at the Dugout Ranch, is Tyler Bird. Bird covered the 6.2 mile course in 35:04, which is the second fastest time in the nine year history of the race.

The fastest time ever for the course is 34:38, set last year by Tyler. His time this year ties the second fastest time of 35:04, set by Taylor Francom in 2008. 

Finishing second is Kade Francom in 38:49, followed by Roger Stash in 39:17.

The remainder of the top ten includes Eli Johnson (39:21), John Blok (40:10), Keri Nelson (41:17), Ryan Bird (41:56), Brian Bothwell (41:57) Lucas Hatch (42:19) and Trace Francom (42:34).

Keri Nielson is the top female finisher at 41:17.  She is followed by Dawnan Wojcik in 46:56 and Lynette Bowers in 48:25.

The course record for women is 36:38, set by Macee Nielson in 2010.

Winners in the mens group up to age 18 are Eli Johnson (39:29), Ryan Bird (41:56), and Lucas Hatch (42:19).

Winners in the mens group between age 19 and 43 are Brian Bothwell (41:57), Jason Johnson (44:26), and Osbaldo Geata (44:44). 

Winners in the mens group age 44 and up are John Blok (40:10), LeRoy Nielson (44:51) and Steve Francom (45:40).

Winners in the womens group up to age 18 are Kendall Harris (50:34), Taylor Lewis (52:53), and Halle Morrison (52:59).

Winners in the womens group between age 19 and 42 are Jenalen Olsen (50:30), Mariah Harris (55:36), and Mandy Scott (57:25).

Winners in the womens group age 43 and up are Kasey Harris (50:50), Randi Nielson (56:12), and Desiree Esplin (59:17).

Sponsors of the annual event include the San Juan Record, Blue Mountain Hospital, Utah Navajo Health Systems, City of Monticello, San Juan Chamber of Commerce, San Juan Pharmacy - Monticello, Canyonlands Lodging, Schafer’s Auto, Blue Mountain Foods, PJs, and Maverik.

Organizations who offer support include a host of volunteers, the Utah Department of Transportation, San Juan County Fair, Utah Highway Patrol, Dugout Ranch, San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, the Scott Burton family and the Monticello High School Cross Country team.

“We just about had to cancel the race this year because of a last minute problem, but everyone came together to havea great race,” said Bill Boyle of the San Juan Record. “Of course, the canyon always comes through. What a breathtaking place!”
