Martinez is a multi-sport Athlete at Monument Valley High School excelling in both basketball and track. He has received a four year full athletic scholarship from Lyndon State
In track he took first place at the Region 19 Finals in the 100M, 200M, and 400M. His high school coaches have been impressed with Martinez this season, improving the time on each of his events by a second or more for multiple weeks in a row.
Coach Bushman said of Martinez, “He has been easy to coach because of his determination to improve each week. DaVonte is the real deal—an athlete who knows what he wants and is willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals. His motivation is contagious and has benefited the whole team.”
Athletic Director Ryan Carlson added, “DaVonte has been a great example of hard work for the other members of his teams. We are pleased that he has been given this opportunity and are positive that he will be a wonderful ambassador for our school and community and the Navajo Nation.”
Martinez will move on to the next level and be part of the first ever Men’s Track Team at Lyndon, a Division III college. The Hornets are eager to have his talents on their teams as noted by their coaches:
Track and Field Head Coach Crespo: “As a freshman, DaVonte is going to be a huge asset to our program and a multi-event threat within our conference. He comes in with range for us in the 400m, 200m and the 100m. We are excited to have him compete for the Green and Gold.”
Cross-Country Head Coach Ummer: “I’m excited to work with DaVonte. I believe he has much room for growth in the sport of cross country and certainly can help the Hornets maintain our running tradition.”
