Buckaroo wrestlers off to quick start

The Monticello Buckaroo wrestlers hosted their first home dual of the season last week, earning a 56-21 victory over the Grand County Red Devils.

Matt Beh started things off with an exciting match, but fell 11-7 to Grand’s Carson Whitney at the final whistle.

Mark Beh put the Bucks in the win column, earning a fall over Rayden Cloud.

Zach Cecil followed with a win by fall over John Corbin.  Carson Sheets earned the first win for the Devils with a win by fall over Buckaroo Steven Robinson.

Shandon Bradford earned a win by fall over Kayden Robertson, followed by a big technical fall win by Zac Musselman over Chris Thompson.

Spencer Squires wrestled a hard fought, exciting match against Grand’s Dakota Johnson. The two traded the lead throughout the match, but Squires finished ahead in the 15-13 win for the Buckaroos.

Buckaroos Brayson Wilcox, Paul DeAnda, Thomas Anderson and Gage Wilcox all earned first period falls for the Buckaroos over Elmore, Wilson, Smith and Shumway of Grand.

Gage Hansen earned the third and final win for the Devils with a fall over Buckaroo Eldean Lammert.

In exhibition matches, Buckaroos Chance Deeter, Tyler Draper and Tacovi Warren all won by fall. Joe Morrison worked hard but lost by fall.

Over the weekend the Buckaroos travelled to Nephi, where they competed in the Juab Winter Classic. The Bucks got a lot of mat time, competing in eight duals on the weekend. Teams were placed in eight pools of three.  In this pool the Buckaroos lost to Copper Hills 48-24. They were then placed in the Bronze Pool, where they wrestled a total of seven duals and defeated each of their opponents to finish first in their pool. 

The Buckaroos bested Preston Idaho, 65-6, Pleasant Grove, 65-18, Hillcrest, 66-12, Richfield, 54-15, Juan Diego, 60-7, Springville, 66-18 and Manti, 60-18.

Buckaroos going undefeated at the tournament were Shandon Bradford-132, Zac Musselman-138, Brayson Wilcox-152, and Thomas Anderson-170. Bradford was 7-0 with all wins by fall.

Musselman went 6-0 with all wins by fall. Wilcox wrestled to an 8-0 finish with seven falls and a Technical Fall. Anderson earned a 7-0 finish with six falls.

Mark Beh-113, Steven Roinson-126, and Spencer Squires-145 all finished with only one loss for the weekend. 

Mark Beh-106, and Zach Cecil-120, each were 4-2 at the tournament.  Tacovi Warren-160, earned four wins for the weekend, followed by Gage Wilcox-182 and Parker Knudsen-285, each with two wins.  

The JV Winter Classic was also held this weekend. Buckaroos Tyler Draper’s at 145, Bryson Henderson at 160 and Seamis Barrell at 220 all brought home top honors with first place medals. Draper was 5-0 on the weekend, Henderson and Barrell finished 4-0.

Finishing with second place medals were Kayden Draper at 132, and Wyatt Fullmer at 138.  Both went 3-2 at the tournament. Eldean Lammert, 220, came home with a third place finish after earning three wins by fall.

Joe Morrison earned a fourth place finish at 138 pounds with a win by fall. Chance Deeter at 138, earned a win by fall and finishing fifth. Also wrestling for the Buckaroos this weekend were Gauge Johnson, Dillon Slack and Mike Hunter.

This weekend the Buckaroos travel to Grand Junction to attend the Warrior Classic at Central High School. The tournament features 41 teams, including many top level Colorado teams. The Bucks then are off for the holiday.
