Buckaroo wrestlers claim second at divisional tournament, send 20 to state

The Monticello Buckaroo wrestling team heads to the state tournament this week after finishing second at the divisional tournament. The Monticello Buckaroo wrestling team competed in the 2017 1A Divisional Tournament over the weekend. The Buckaroo mat men finished the day in second place with 252 points, behind Duchesne, who won the division with 303.5 points.

The Buckaroos earned 12 spots in the finals to compete for a championship. All 20 Buckaroos earned a chance to wrestle at the State Tournament by placing in the top six in their weight class. 

Finishing the day as champions are Zac Musselman, Shandon Bradford and Thomas Anderson.

Musselman earned a 10-0 win in the finals and had a win by fall in the early round. He was also selected by 1A coaches to receive the Outstanding Wrestler award.

Bradford defeated teammate Kayden Draper 12-0 in the finals and had a win by fall in the early rounds. Anderson earned a win by fall on his way to the finals where he came out strong, taking an early match lead, and earned an exciting win by fall in the third period.

Also earning a spot in the finals and bringing home second place medals are Matt Beh, Mark Beh, Steven Robinson, Kayden Draper, Tyler Draper, Brayson Wilcox, Paul DeAnda, Gage Wilcox and Parker Knudsen.  

Mark Beh earned a 6-4 win in his preliminary match before a tough loss in the finals, 7-5, in sudden victory.

Mark Beh earned a win by fall in his first round before a 17-2 loss in the finals.  Robinson fought hard in the finals, losing a heartbreaker 2-1.

Kayden Draper earned two big wins, 15-1 and a fall, to earn his spot in the finals, where he faced teammate Shandon Bradford. Draper fought hard but lost 12-0.  

Tyler Draper won a tough match, 2-1 in sudden victory over teammate Spencer Squires on his way to the finals, where he was defeated 7-3 in a hard fought match.

Brayson Wilcox earned two wins by fall in the preliminary rounds. In the finals, he worked hard, but came up short in a 6-2 loss.

DeAnda won by fall in each of the first two rounds but lost by fall in the finals. Gage Wilcox earned an exciting win by fall to earn a spot in the finals, where he fought hard but was unable to secure the win.

Knudsen earned a win by fall in the semifinal round but lost by fall in the finals.

Buckaroos Spencer Squires, Wyatt Fullmer and Tacovi Warren each earned a win in the consolation finals, bringing home third place medals.

Fullmer earned a close win in the first round, 15-12, before being defeated by teammate Zac Musselman. Fullmer came back to win his next match by fall.

Squires faced teammate Tyler Draper in his first round. The two battled in a tough match to a 1-1 score at the end of regulation, with Draper earning the win in overtime. Squires earned back-to-back wins by fall in the final two rounds.

Warren earned a win by fall before a loss to teammate Paul DeAnda sent him to the consolation bracket. Warren came back with two big wins 14-4 and 12-5 in the final rounds of the tournament.     

Bryson Henderson earned a fourth place medal after winning two matches by fall.

Finishing with fifth place medals are Dillon Slack, Justin Cecil and Clayton Westcott. Slack and Cecil each earned two wins on the weekend, with Westcott earning one win.

Seamis Barrell rounded out the Buckaroo team with a sixth place medal, earning one win by fall at the tournament.  

This weekend the Buckaroos close out their season at the Utah State Wrestling Tournament at UVU in Orem.  The first round of 1A wrestling begins Friday at 3:30 p.m.  

This year there will be a new 1A State format from past seasons. All wrestlers who placed third through sixth at the Divisional Tournament will have a wrestling in match against wrestlers from the other 1A Division.

It will be a single elimination round. Wrestlers who win will earn a spot in the bracket; wrestlers who lose will be out of the tournament.
