The Monticello Buckaroo wrestling team brought home a 13th place finish from the Warrior Classic at Central High School in Grand Junction this past weekend. The Warrior is considered one of the toughest tournaments in Colorado and featured 41 teams this year.

Zac Musselman had an exciting weekend as the top Buckaroo placer. Musselman was 5-0, winning his first four matches by fall on his way to an exciting finish in the finals.

He wrestled an undefeated wrestler from Paonia. The score was 0-0 after the first period. In the second, a reversal put Musselman down 2-0 but he reversed early in the third and tied the score.

Musselman was behind 3-2 with only 30 seconds remaining on the clock when he shot in and the two wrestlers tied up. With only three ticks remaining in the match, Musselman pulled his head free, scoring the takedown and the win to become the first Buckaroo to win the prestigious tournament.

Brayson Wilcox had a great weekend, falling just short of the top spot and bringing home a strong finish and second place medal. Wilcox won two matches by fall, had a 12-1 major decision, and won an exciting 6-4 match in the final seconds of the semifinal round to secure his spot in the finals. He was defeated by Josiah Rider of Grand Junction, who is ranked #4 in the nation.

Gage Wilcox was only one match short of placing in the tournament, with a win by fall and a 9-0 major decision.

Also earning wins for the Buckaroos are Justin Cecil with two wins. Thomas Anderson, Tyler Draper, Mark Beh and Zach Cecil all earned a win. Brevin Olson also wrestled at the tournament for the Buckaroos.

The remainder of the Buckaroo team attended the Fruita Monument Tournament, where they earned a strong fourth place finish. The Bucks were only 6.5 points out of third place and finished behind Uintah, Grand Junction (Central), and Green River, Wyoming.

Finishing in the top spot are Kayden Draper and Wyatt Fullmer, each bringing home a first place medal. Both Buckaroos earned four wins by fall.

Finishing with third place medals are Matt Beh, Steven Robinson, and Eldean Lammert. Beh earned five wins by fall, and Robinson finished with four wins, including a 9-0 major decision and a technical fall. Lammert had two wins by fall.

Clayton Young, Robert Musselman, Dillon Wheeler and Joe Morrison each earned two wins on the weekend, with Drew Westcott and Tuff Adair also earning a win. Alan Pettit also wrestled for the Buckaroos.

Earlier in the week, the Buckaroos hosted the Cortez Panthers and the Whitehorse Raiders, defeating both teams, 30-11 and 24-0 respectively.

Against the Panthers, Zach Cecil won by fall, Zac Musselman won 11-0, Wyatt Fullmer won by fall, Tyler Draper won by technical fall 15-0, Brayson Wilcox won by technical fall 16-0, and Thomas Anderson won 11-3. Brevin Olson and Clayton Young were defeated in their matches.

Against the Raiders, Joe Morrison, Tuff Adair, Gage Wilcox and Eldean Lammert all won by fall.

The Buckaroos will travel to Aztec and Piedra Vista this Thursday. They will wrestle at Aztec High School at 4 p.m. then at Piedra Vista High School at 7 p.m. before heading into the holiday break.
