San Juan Bronco fans were treated to a sneak peek of the 2018-19 boys and girls basketball teams when the two teams hosted the first ever “Bronco Night” at San Juan High on Monday, Nov. 19.
The event was more than just a scrimmage for the teams who also competed against each other in a three-point contest.
Elijah Lee represented the boys team and narrowly defeated Syannah Ketchum, who represented the Lady Broncos.
In addition to basketball, the community was able to show their support for the San Juan cheerleaders and the Bronco drill team—The Royals, both of whom performed.
Those in attendance were also entertained by the young men and women of Flytz Gymnastics who put on a great halftime show.
The main events of the night were the Blue and White scrimmages from the Bronco basketball teams.
Coaches Laura Stearns and Travis Black divided their teams into two squads with the girls teams tipping off first.
The girls scrimmage was won by the Blue team, who defeated the White team by 10 points, 34-24.
Ketchum’s 11 points led the Blue team, just a point ahead of Madi Palmer, who finished with 10.
Quiana Dishface added nine points and Katie Giddings chipped in four points in the scrimmage win.
Delaney Palmer paced the White team with nine points.
Bodell Nielson scored seven points and Tasiah Little finished with six.
Emilee Palmer rounded out the scoring for the White with two points.
The boys Blue team also came out victorious, edging out the White team 41-37.
While the Blue team picked up the win, both teams showed solid teamwork throughout the scrimmage and played well on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court.
San Juan’s focus on team play was evident, as many times throughout the game players from both teams passed up long jump shots in order to dish the ball to a teammate who had a better shooting opportunity.
The unselfish effort led to a balanced scoring attack from both teams.
The Blue team was led by Randall Flavel, who had 11, followed by Landen Pemberton with nine, Elijah Lee added eight, Shaw Nielson had seven, and Trez Perkins finished with six points.
Jaxon Torgerson led the White team with 14, just ahead of Seth Pugh’s 11, while Ryan Imlay and Josh Whitehorse each contributed six points.
The girls’ season got underway Nov. 27 with a trip to Layton Christian.
They will head to Price Nov. 29 through Dec. 1 to compete in the Carbon Tournament. San Juan plays Carbon to open the tournament on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 8 p.m.
On Friday the Broncos will square off with Union at 4:40 p.m. before wrapping things up on Saturday, Dec. 1 against South Summit at 12 p.m.
The first game for the boys team is also in the books. The Broncos took on the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
