Adriana Johnson was the winner again in the San Juan School District Spelling Bee on February 5.

Johnson, an eighth grade student at Albert R Lyman Middle School (ARL), is no stranger to the top of the spelling bee podium.

Kaidence Mitchelle, a fifth grade student at Bluff Elementary, finished in second place.

The third place winner is Luke Jeppesen, a fourth grade student at Blanding Elementary.

Twenty-one students, ranging from fourth to eighth grade, met for the annual academic competition, held at San Juan High School.

Three students each were sent from Blanding, Bluff, Monticello, and Tse’bii’nidzisgai elementary schools, ARL Middle School, and Monticello and Whitehorse high schools. The students competed for the honor to represent the San Juan School District at the Regional Spelling Bee.

“We would like to congratulate all those who participated in this competition,” said Bonnie Purcell, the San Juan School District K-12 Literacy Specialist. “We wish our district winners the best of luck. We would love to see a region winner come from the San Juan School District.”

Dr. Doug Wright was the pronouncer in the competition. Judges and consultants include Theresa Wilson, Bret Jacobsen, and Aspen English. Mason Lyman and Joy Parker were technical support, and Monty Bradford helped to set up the venue.

The Region Spelling Bee will be held at Grand County High School in Moab on March 6 at 1 p.m.
