With only a few weeks left now until the Independence Day celebration in Blanding, Committee Chairman Jon Hunt would like to mention three important things regarding the festivities this year in Blanding.

Theme:

“Independence Day is a very important celebration for all of San Juan County. We are a patriotic bunch who love to meet together and celebrate our independence. We love freedom and are proud of those who are and have served to defend it — some even paying the ultimate price. We each want to do all that we can to defend the constitution; we want to be patriotic Americans.

“‘Stand Up For America’ is the theme for this year’s Independence Day celebration. This is a unique theme and carries with it a lot of meaning. To stand up for America requires more than just saluting the flag as it passes by or going to the polls to vote.

To really stand up for America means getting involved and letting our voices be heard. We are a republic and have representatives in Washington; these representatives, our congressmen, need to hear from us. They have always welcomed comments from those they represent.

If we only point out to each other the problems we see in government it doesn’t do much good, but if we would start now to write to our congressmen it would make a world of difference in how they represent us. The strength of our country lies in congress and not with who is selected as President. The president is not a king, unless Congress allows him to act like one.

“With a strong Congress an ambitious president can do little harm, and with a weak Congress a strong president can do little good.” (Tom Gow)

Without our voices being heard, our congressmen can easily be persuaded by the sophistries of evil and designing people who care little for our constitution. I hope to gain, through this year’s theme of “Stand Up For America, an awareness of the need to write our congressmen and let our voices be heard.

The Parade:

We encourage everyone who can to participate in the parade. Family floats are welcome, representing a family heritage of those who have and are, Standing Up For America. We need floats from the businesses and organizations that each of you is involved in. Let’s make this year’s parade the best ever.

Booths:

“Need a Summer Fundraiser?” Run a booth at this year’s Independence Day celebration. There could be shooting and toss games, etc. There could be things you want to sell, homemade or otherwise. Food and dessert booths are always needed. We would love to see a variety of booths this year. The prices for booths range from $10 to $35 depending on what you need.

We are excited about this year’s celebration. Please invite all of your family and friends to join us. Look for more details and a full schedule in the weeks to come.
