Students are tested in Performance, Technique, Theory, Ear Training, Sight Reading, and Creative Musicianship.
Every year across the state of Utah, approximately 1,000 students participate in the program.
The judge this year was Juliet Preston. A concert pianist and nationally certified teacher, Juliet Preston has presented on pedagogy topics at state conferences as well as adjudicating piano competitions throughout Texas, Montana, and Utah.
Preston holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Utah and a Master of Music from the University of Texas at Austin. She has taught piano and pedagogy courses at Concordia University at Austin, University of Montana, and Weber State University.
Preston enjoyed the San Juan County students, saying: “Please tell the students that I was impressed at how well-prepared they were and very bright to work with - definitely the ‘cream of the crop.’” All students achieved in the 90th per centile or higher. Pianists who participated are students of Denise Frost and Jody Fellmeth.
