The 6.2 mile race winds its way through the canyon, beginning at Newspaper Rock and finishing near the Dugout Ranch. The race attracts a full range of participants, from world-class athletes to weekend warriors. Runners and walkers alike enjoy the breathtaking race.
Racers can register and pick up race packets beginning Friday evening at the Lamplight Restaurant in Monticello, 655 East Center Street. For those who are hungry, there will be a number of carbo-loading items on the Lamplight menu, with prices beginning at $9.95.
Race day registration also will take place at the 10K finish line. In previous years, registration was near the starting line. Racers who plan to register at the race site are encouraged to arrive early in order to avoid a late start.
The fourth running of the Newspapers Rock 10K is expected to attract a record crowd. The 2009 winner is Ryan Heck of Blanding, in a time of 38:41. The women’s winner is Jennifer Hughes in 39:30, which also set a course record.
The men’s course record is 35:04 by Taylor Francom. Taylor Francom and Ryan Heck are scheduled to race this weekend.
There will be a host of age categories for the race, including a 50+ age category.
“We hope to get a good crowd and have a beautiful day,” said San Juan Record publisher Bill Boyle. “It is a great way to enjoy the canyon in the fall.”
