County to mark historic road rights-of-way

San Juan County has ordered 20 historical right-of-way signs to be placed throughout the county. The signs feature historical photos of San Juan County.
It has not yet been decided where to place the signs. They declare the county’s historical right of way.
County Surveyor Sam Cantrell was given the project under the direction of the County Commission.
Cantrell found historic photos of the county and brought several to the commissioners. The commissioners then decided on photos of Angel Arch and Monument Valley.
Although which of the historic roads to include has not been decided, possibilities mentioned include the Hole in the Rock trail, San Juan Hill and parts of the Old Spanish Trail.
Ten signs of each image have been ordered. The signs featuring Angel Arch will be placed in the northern part of the county and the signs featuring a stagecoach riding through Monument Valley will be placed in the southern part of the county.
The idea came from a Colorado county that did the same thing. Commissioner Phil Lyman presented the idea and assigned the task to Cantrell.
Lyman advocates that Recapture Canyon should be included among the roads where the signs are placed.
Lyman was convicted of two federal misdemeanor counts following the May 2014 Recapture Canyon protest ride. He is due to be sentenced on July 15.
Cantrell said the right of way signs do not necessarily imply that all vehicle types have access to the historical right of way.
