County resident fifth in Navajo Nation primary

San Juan County resident Kenneth Maryboy finished fifth in the August 27 primary election for Navajo Nation president.
Maryboy received 3,153 votes in the election, which pared the list of 17 candidates to two for the November general election.
Joe Shirley, Jr., a prior Navajo Nation president, received 10,910 votes to earn a spot on the general election ballot. Shirley will face Chris Deschene, who received 9,734 votes.
Maryboy, who currently serves as San Juan County Commissioner, also finished behind Russell Begaye (7,404 votes) and Donald Benally (5,286 votes).
He finished ahead of twelve additional candidates, including current Navajo Nation president Ben Shelly, who secured 2,446 votes.
