Trevin Palmer awarded Gena Shumway Nielson Scholarship
For the last 10 years, the Shumway and Nielson families have awarded 1-2 seniors with the Gena Shumway Nielson Memorial Scholarship. Gena Nielson worked at San Juan High School as an office secretary for 13 years. She passed away from ovarian cancer in April of 2013. Gena loved the students at SJH and would do anything she could to help them have a better day! We have come to learn that she would drive students to the Doctor’s office, take them shopping, and even get them out of a sluff in exchange for a diet Mtn. Dew. Gena also served as the cheer coach for 3 or so years and was a huge sports fan. Cheering students on is one thing she did very best.
As a family we have tried to choose students that exemplify Gena’s kind and giving spirit. Students who fight through trials, think of others while cheering them on, and doing their best to make SJH a better place.
We have liked to think that the Gena Shumway Nielson Memorial Scholarship is a scholarship for just being a good, nice person.
The Shumway and Nielson families have enjoyed honoring Gena in this specific way. The students of SJH will always have a special soul in Heaven, cheering them on.
