Local athletes excel at state track meet

San Juan High School saw a champion crowned at the May 16-17 2-A State Track meet. Junior Arizona Carr threw the shot put 34 feet 11 inches to finish in first place.
Fellow San Juan thrower Sara Morley followed close behind Carr. Morley threw 33 feet 5 inches to finish in second place. Morley, a sophomore, also placed seventh in the discus.
San Juan High thrived on the boys side of the competition. Junior Max Morley led the Broncos track and field team. Morley finished second in the 100 meter dash, running a blazing 11.35 race, just two-tenths of a second behind the winner.
Morley also placed second in the 400-meter dash, fourth in the 200-meter dash, and was the anchor for the San Juan 4X100 meter relay team.
The 4X100 team also featured Hunter Latham, Payton Palmer, and Brittain Bowring. San Juan earned second place in a photo finish. Kanab High School finished just one-hundredth of a second in front of the San Juan relay team.
Bowring also showed off his hops to compliment his speed. The junior bounded to a third place finish in the long jump, with a jump of 20 feet 6 inches, and tied for eighth place in the high jump.
San Juan Senior Christian Sherrow also had a good meet. Sherrow finished fifth in the 800-meter run, and also ran in the 400-meter finals.
Sherrow was also the anchor for the 4X400 relay team that finished in fourth place. Sterling Black, Isaiah Warren, and Jaden Ivins also ran the relay.
Ivins also placed seventh in the long jump, as well as eighth in both the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles.
Senior Brayden Giddings and Jens Grover both threw well. Giddings placed fourth in the discus, while Grover placed sixth in the javelin.
Whitehorse High School junior Davik Mitchell brought home a sixth place medal in the discus in the 1-A classification. Mitchell also placed eighth in the shot put.
Monument Valley’s Ki-Jana Martinez just missed medaling by placing seventh in the 3200 meter run.
