A mammoth fire expected

A mammoth fire is expected in Bluff on Friday, December 21, when a 16-foot effigy of a wooly mammoth is burned. The effigy was built in recent months by Bluff artist Joe Pachak. Pachak recently helped to identify a mammoth on a piece of rock art at Sand Island, near Bluff. It is not known if the fire was scheduled to coincide with the winter solstice or as a last ditch attempt to mark the end of the Mayan calendar. The flame is set to be lit at 8 p.m. on Friday evening. Bruce Adams photo
