Monticello honors beautiful yards

It’s that season again where the Parks and Beautification Committee is awarding those that are taking extra care in their yards. With the rain we’ve received in the past few weeks, many of our yards and gardens are in full bloom and greener than ever!
Bill and Kay Francom are the recipients of the Xeriscape Award. With the help of their son, Steve, Kay designed the area, and with the manpower of their grandsons, just recently completed the project.
Kay states that her philosophy in life is “Simplicity,” and that motto is reflected in the simple yet stunning layout of their yard.
The Francom’s xeriscaped yard is a fantastic example of how a drought friendly and water wise landscape is not only appropriate for the area we live, but it can be impressive and practical at the same time.
The winner of the Beautiful Yard Award is Martha Johnson. Those that know her know that despite being small in stature, she has a tangible joy and pizazz for life.
Her flower garden reflects the same concept – though she has a small space to work from, her flowers emanate delight and zest for all things living. From birdbaths to a fire engine red bench to a raised bed full of brand new dinner plate dahlias, Martha’s garden is truly eye candy for anyone passing by.
Martha tells us she enjoys spending her time amongst her flowers because it’s cheaper than therapy. A yellow dinner plate dahlia is Martha’s favorite flower, and under the expert knowledge of her good friend Vee Carroll, is anticipating having at least one of her very own in her garden later this year.
