Fumie Shino Dunow February 3, 1932 ~ July 7, 2024

Fumie Shino Dunow, 92 was born on February 3,1932, in Torrance, CA to Tokichi and Semo Shino. Fumie passed away peacefully on July7, 2024.
Fumie had two sisters, Yuri West and Mitzi Jeffreys, and two brothers, George and Frank Shino, who all proceeded her in death.
The Shino family lived in Torrance, CA until the war broke out between Japan and the United States. The Shino family was sent to internment camp in Arkansas without their father. He was ill and was located in another camp, where he eventually passed.
After the war ended, Fumie's mother decided to take her family to Japan as they had lost everything when the war started. They lived with relatives and Fumie went to school, which was quite an ordeal, traveling miles to the train on foot, and then walking miles to the school.
Eventually Fumie decided to come back to America and she traveled by steam boat with her sister and started her new life by herself.  She found a job working for a family for room and board as a housekeeper, while she continued high school.
After graduating, she worked a few jobs to support herself, until she found the work she enjoyed: banking. When her sister and her family moved to Idaho, Fumie moved with them, where she continued her career in banking.
In July, 1985, the bank where Fumie was working was robbed by two men with guns. This was a very traumatic situation as she was the assistant manager and was in charge that day. After that, Fumie had PTSD whenever she heard loud noises, like fireworks.
She retired in 1994, and was introduced to Bill Dunow by Bill's brother. Fumie had never married, and was swept off her feet by Bill. They were married in 1994.
Fumie came to Monticello and was welcomed into the Dunow family, where she now had an instant family of three sons, Bill Jr (Etta), Chuck (Peggy), and Gary (Nancy) and many grandchildren.
Bill and Fumie enjoyed traveling all over together. They wintered in Bouse, AZ, and visited family in Wisconsin, Alabama, Idaho, and California. This was a great time for Fumie, as she didn't have the opportunity to visit her family very often when she was single.
When Bill decided that wintering in Bouse was too much, they settled back in Monticello permanently.
Bill passed away in April 2011, and Fumie chose to stay in Monticello with the family that had become her own.  Fumie was a kind and positive woman throughout her life, even with two bouts of cancer and other health issues.
In early June, she fell at home and broke her hip. She died peacefully on July 7, 2024 at her new home of Gary and Nancy Dunow.
Fumie will be laid to rest at the Monticello Cemetery.  Special thanks to all the wonderful people at San Juan Hospital, and to her best friend Martha Johnson, for always being there.
