Philip “Phil” Otis Hawkins

December 5, 1926 ~ October 1, 2021

Philip “Phil” Otis Hawkins, 94 of Bloomfield, was called home to our Heavenly Father on Friday, October 1, 2021 at his home in Bloomfield.

Phil was born on December 5, 1926 in Blanding, UT. He married Veloy Helquist January 11, 1945 in Salt Lake City, UT. They were later sealed in the Manti Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on May 11, 1962. He served in the Army in World War II in the Aleutian Islands.

Phil and Veloy lived in Blanding, UT; Gunnison, UT; Farmington, NM; and Bloomfield, NM. Phil worked in the Uranium Mines and also as an Auto Mechanic while training and racing race horses. For a time, he ran Bloomfield Shamrock.

Phil loved his family, especially four wheeling with them and spending time at Nizhoni Campground as Camp Host.

He was the highlight of the “Hawkins Family Reunion” where he always sat at the campfire playing his guitar and singing.

Phil is survived by his 10 children, Terry (Kathy), Shauna (Ron Apple), Gary (Bonnie), Jeff, John (Louise), Sue (Tom Hill), Sharon, Dennis (Nancy), Debra (Ron Barney), and Phylis (Andy Sanchez); 35 grandchildren; 95 great-grandchildren; and 36 great-great-grandchildren.

Phil is preceded in death by his wife, Veloy, parents Lawrence and Laura Hawkins, four brothers, one sister, two grandchildren, and a son-in-law.

Services were held Saturday, October 9, 2021 in Aztec. Burial followed at the East Hammond Cemetery in Bloomfield.

He will be greatly missed.

Phil’s care is entrusted to Cope Memorial Chapel of Farmington.
