San Juan County to manage manhunt near Moab

The San Juan County Emergency Command Post was on its way to the potash plant southwest of Moab as the print deadline for the San Juan Record approached on November 21.
The third full day of a manhunt in the rugged canyon country may have passed without an arrest or a resolution.
A large number of local law enforcement personnel are involved in the hunt for a man accused of shooting a state park ranger near Dead Horse Point in northern San Juan County.
Brody Young, of Moab, was shot three times on November 19 while apparently attempting a routine stop at the Poison Spider Mesa trailhead.
The supect, Lance Leeroy Arellano, apparently abandoned his vehicle a short distance away and fled into the rugged canyon country near the Colorado River.
Young is reported to be in critical condition in a Grand Junction, CO hospital but is expected to recover.
Because of the location of the shooting, the investigation and manhunt was initially handled by the Grand County Sheriff’s office although it took place in San Juan County.
On November 22, San Juan County assumed command of the search and investigation.
The search is near the potash plant and across the Colorado River from Hurrah Pass.
A host of resources are involved in the search and investigation, including officers on foot, in helicopters and in boats on the Colorado River.
Nearly 200 law enforcement personnel have been involved in the search, including local, state and federal officers. Arellano is considered armed and dangerous and may have been injured in the initial shooting.
Officials have continually narrowed the search and now believe the suspect is in a small area in extremely rocky terrain.
