Commission Candidate: Jamie Harvey

My name is Jamie Harvey and I am from Montezuma Creek, Utah. I am Dine’ (Navajo), speak, read, write and understand Dine’ Bizaa’d. I am Txlaa’sh chii’ ‘ih (Red Bottom) born for Ta’h Ch’ii’h ni’h (Red Streak running into water) of the Yeii’ designation. My Maternal grandfathers are Kii’ Y’aa A’aani (Towering house) and My Paternal Grandfathers are Kl’iizh ‘ii Xl’aani (Manygoats).
I am running for San Juan County Commissioner District 3 because I believe our community needs a leader willing to work with other team members for the best interests of all residents. I know the county commission could benefit from a team player like myself. My experience working as a social worker with the state of Utah, as well as serving in various leadership roles in the community, has prepared me to represent the people of San Juan County, particularly those in District 3.
Something I would like to change as the new commissioner would be to end divisions within our county. My district covers a wide geographical are, including residents bordering the communities of Monticello, Blanding, and parts of the reservation. Every citizen deserves to feel heard, regardless of where they reside. Those who live and work in San Juan County care for each other and share common concerns. We want to protect our heritage and enjoy our land. We want government to be transparent, accessible, and honest. Progress will be achieved by working together.
As the representative of District 3, I intend to be present and in person at all commission meetings. I will not allow outside influences to dictate an agenda contrary to our common community interests. I will not consult out of state attorneys to make decisions for me regarding important county issues.
Voters can feel confident in supporting my candidacy because I have experience working with a team to make a difference within the community. I served as an elected Secretary/Treasurer for the Aneth Chapter, and as the Vice Chairman in the Navajo Utah Commission (NUC). I also have been on the Utah Navajo Health Systems, Inc. Health Board from 2001 to 2020, serving as UNHS Board Chairman for three years. During this time, I participated in the negotiation of Contract Health funding with Indian Health Services where we secured funding to construct new health facilities in Montezuma Creek and Blanding, Utah. I also currently serve on the Utah Navajo Trust Fund, Dineh Advisory Committee.
As an elected official I pledge to establish transparency through consistent local reporting among elected Utah Navajo Chapter leaders and community members, so they are well informed of county commission functions and issues. I will also be available to members of all the communities that I represent. I will take the time to listen and build partnerships that benefit all of San Juan County.
I’m Jamie Harvey and I’d be honored to serve you. I ask for your vote on November 8. Please reach out any time 928.864.8665 navajoharvey@yahoo.com.
