The Monticello High School football team earned their fourth win of the year 42-22 at the expense of county rival Monument Valley this past Friday, September 30 in Monument Valley.
The Buckaroos opened the first quarter with a four-yard touchdown run from running back Javlin Robison. After a defensive stop, Monticello quarterback JD McDonald ran the ball in from 29 yards out to extend the Monticello lead.
After another defensive stop, Easton Young extended the lead with a rushing touchdown from nine yards out. The Buckaroos scored on their next drive when McDonald passed to Landon Ewart for a 23-yard touchdown.
On the following kickoff, a hard hit from Robert Morrison resulted in a fumble in the end zone which was recovered by Thomas Fullmer for a Monticello touchdown. That made the score 32-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Mason Atwood sacked Monument Valley’s quarterback in the end zone for a Monticello safety while Tavon Black added a rushing touchdown to give the Buckaroos a 42-0 lead.
Late in the second quarter, the Cougar offense came to life with a sustained drive that appeared to be stalled near midfield.
On fourth and four, Joshua Hicks passed across the middle to Doreon Chee who ran into the end zone to put the Cougars on the board and make the score 42-6 at halftime.
With a running clock in the second half, each team had two possessions. Monument Valley drove the length of the field in the third quarter before Hicks ran the ball in for a touchdown from two yards out to give the Cougars their second score of the evening.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Cougars faced another critical fourth down just a yard from the goal line. On the play, Chee snuck the ball up the middle reaching over the goaline to score a touchdown.
The Cougars also executed a successful two-point conversion when Melias Cly found Shaydon Fatt in the end zone on a passing play.
Monticello ran out the clock on their last possession making the final score 42-22.
Monument Valley is at home again this week as they host Navajo Pine on Friday, October 7.
