Bulldogs beat Buckaroos on the football field

The Monticello High School football team fell to 3-3 on the year with a loss on September 16 in Dove Creek. The Colrado 8-Man defending champion Bulldogs got the best of the Buckaroos in a 58-18 final.
Dove Creek opened the game with a four-play 80-yard scoring drive, culminating with an explosive 63-yard touchdown run by Gage Buffington. The Bulldogs converted a two-point conversion on a run by Taber DeJane.
Monticello went three-and-out on their first offensive possession but a good punt by JD McDonald pinned the Bulldogs at their own ten.
Still, Dove Creek responded with a nine-play 90-yard drive capped with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Colten Fury to Josh Kibel, making the score 14-0.
After another three plays Monticello punted again but the defense came up big to stop the Bulldogs when Zac Thayn pulled down an interception.
Facing a third-and-long McDonald ran the ball 35 yards to flip the field and give the Buckaroos a first down at their own 35. A high snap two plays later led to McDonald scrambling around and throwing up a prayer that was intercepted by DeJane at midfield.
The first quarter ended with Dove Creek leading 14-0. To start the second quarter the Bulldogs’ offense kept rolling, adding another score on the board to increase their lead to 20-0.
Monticello’s first offensive play of the quarter was another snap over McDonald’s head. The quarterback tracked down the ball at the 15 yard line and scrambled before launching it to midfield where Thayn was waiting. Thayn pulled down the pass and sprinted to the end zone to get Monticello on the board and cut the deficit to 20-6.
Dove Creek begantheir next drive at the ten yard line. With the ball at the 23 Fury found Buffington on a short crossing routeand he took the ball the remaining 77 yards into the endzone. Fury ran in a two-point conversion to make the score 28-6.
After another short Monticello possession Dove Creek had a one-play drive with Buffington finding a hole and sprinting 55 yards to the endzone. A run by Kibel added two points and increased the Bulldog lead to 36-6.
Yet another short Monticello possession was follwed by a Dove Creek scoring drive with Buffington punching the ball in from three yards out. Fury tossed a pass to Buffington for two to make the score 44-6 at halftime.
In the second half Monticello began their first possession on their own 30. On fourth down McDonald ran the ball 65 yards into the end zone to give the Bucks their second score on the night and make the score 44-12.
Dove Creek scored on their next possession with a 44-yard run by Kibel but an unsuccessful two-point try left the score 50-12. Both teams scored once more. DeJane added a 54-yard run with Fury throwing a two-point conversion to Buffington to make the score 58-12 after three quarters.
The Buckaroos scored in the fourth quarter on a McDonald three-yard run to make the final score 58-18.
