Diminished San Juan volleyball team suffers loss to #1 Enterprise
The San Juan High School volleyball team wasn’t firing on all cylinders this past week.
Struggling through illness, the Lady Broncos faced the #1-ranked Enterprise Wolves in Blanding on Thursday, September 9.
They came out of the gate strong, keeping pace in the first set. Trading attacks, the Lady Broncos were never up or down by more than two points.
But Enterprise middle blocker Huber was able to hit wherever she was set, helping the Lady Wolves inch past the Broncos for a 25-22 first-set win.
In the second, the Wolves’ six-foot middle blocker, Noah Moyle made consistent kills San Juan couldn’t answer.
The Broncos continued to lack rhythm, dropping the set 25-9. Enterprise blocked any attempts the Broncos were able to set up.
In the third, San Juan came out determined, scoring five unanswered points.
Bailey Brown put over two ace serves to force a timeout by the visiting team and Macey Jacobsen made key blocks to keep the Broncos in the game.
A successful kill increased the San Juan led to 6-0, but that’s when the Wolves began to mount a comeback.
Successful kills on the Bronco side and a great defense brought the score to 8-6 for the Broncos. The teams continued to trade point for point until it was tied at 16-all.
Both teams mounted convincing attacks, but the rally ended when Enterprise killed into the block.
The Wolves capitalized on an uneven rhythm, often attacking at the net on over passes and not always waiting for the third touch.
San Juan wasn’t able to recover, losing the set 25-16 and the match 3-0. With the loss, the Lady Broncos dropped to 3-6 on the year.
They’re ranked #19 in the first 2A volleyball RPI of the season, which was released by the Utah High School Activities Association on Monday, September 13.
It’s another full week this week for the San Juan girls. They hosted the rival Monticello Buckaroos on Tuesday, September 14 in a rematch of their August 31 loss.
On Friday, September 17 the Lady Broncos head to Beaver for a Region 19 matchup. They’ll finish up that road trip on Saturday against South Sevier in Monroe.
