Monticello basketball teams get home wins

The Monticello basketball teams earned a couple of wins in their home gymnasium last week. On January 7 the Buckaroos hosted the Dolores Bears for a doubleheader with both contests going to overtime.
In the first contest the Monticello girls held a 21-20 lead at halftime but after four quarters of play the score was all-tied up 44-44. In the overtime period the lady Bucks outscored the Bears 10-4 to earn a 54-48 win.
The lady Bucks were led in the game by Makenna Peterson who finished with 22 points in the victory. Maron Freestone scored 14 while Braylee Freestone added eight. Mechaiyah Lansing added six points while Samantha McDonald and Shaydin Freestone each scored two.
In the boys contest the Buckaroos trailed Dolores 24-22 at halftime but were able to end regulation with a score of 48-48. In the overtime period Monticello outscored Dolores 14-5 to earn the 62-53 victory.
Kaden Pehrson led the team with 25 points, while Traken Lee scored 12 and Cache Young scored 11. Kooper Nielson added four points, while Triston Felix scored two. Jackson Keyes and Tommy Morrison each had one point in the game.
Pehrson and Young each finished with a double-double with Pehrson recording 12 rebounds and Young 11. Young also led the team with six assists. Keyes recorded four steals while Young had three.
In a Region 19 battle both Monticello teams once again earned a victory at home. In the first game the girls trailed 19-18 at halftime and were able to rally in the second half to earn a 36-33 victory.
Monticello was led by Braylee Freestone who scored 12 points on the night. Teammates Mechaiyah Lansing and Maron Freestone each had six points. McDonald scored five, Peterson had four and Shaydin Freestone scored three in the win.
In the boys game Monticello led 25-24 at halftime and built an 11 point lead in the third quarter ultimately winning 62-43.
Monticello was led by Young who finished with 19 points in the game, Pehrson scored 17 while Keyes had 13. Lee finished with eight, Nielson three, and Jaeden Camacho with one point.
Pehrson recorded a double-double with 16 rebounds in the game, while Keyes had eight and Nielson recorded seven.
Nielson led the team with five assists, Nielson, Pehrson and Lee all recorded one steal in the game.
