San Juan boys tennis season comes to a close at 3A state tournament

Seven San Juan High School boys tennis players made the trip north to represent their team in the 2025 3A Utah State Boys Tennis Tournament this past Thursday and Friday, May 8-9.
The first round of the tournament was played at Brighton High School in Cottonwood Heights. Of the seven Broncos, only Spencer Gosney advanced to the second round in third singles play.
Sixteenth-seeded Gosney defeated Gunnison Valley’s #17 Lucas Nelson in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-4. With the victory, Gosney was set for a tough matchup with #1 Shiv Sondhi of The Waterford School as the tournament shifted to Liberty Park in Salt Lake City on Friday, May 9.
Gosney battled hard, but suffered a straight-sets loss 6-2 and 6-0. The San Juan senior picked up four wins this season – one in second singles play and three in third singles.
Noah Olsen, the #23 seed in the first singles tournament, suffered a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Richfield’s #10 Hunter Moore in the first round on Thursday. He finished the year with two wins.
In the second singles first round #21 Wyatt Keith fell to Carbon’s #12 Memphis Howell 6-4 and 6-0. Keith also mustered a couple wins this year.
In first doubles play #21 Peter Hoopes and Alex Lyman fell to South Sevier’s #12 Lincoln Hansen and Eli Dopp in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0. That duo earned one win on the campaign.
And in second doubles #19 Boston Bowers and Hayden Cardall lost to Delta’s #14 Kyson Huntsman and Joel Perez 6-1 and 6-2.
As a team, the Broncos earned one match win this season and 12 set wins. Head Coach Casey Olsen offered some end-of-season thoughts in a recent conversation with the San Juan Record.
“Our team took third at the region tournament in Moab, which we were all pleased with,” he stated. “Between cancellations, rescheduling due to weather, injuries, and rearranging doubles teams, the season got off to a rocky start.
“But the boys made the most of it and we ended strong. The seniors worked to make it a good season for the underclassmen and tried to make them feel included. Ending the season at Liberty Park in the second round was a good way to cap off the season.”
